Amusing Quote About Inflation on NBR

I heard a rather amusing quote about inflation by John Waggoner, Mutual Fund Columnist, USA Today on the Nightly Business Report yesterday and thought I would share it with all of you.

Ask most economists about inflation, and they`ll tell you there is no inflation, except in energy and health care and housing. So as long as you don`t have a car, a cough or a roof, you have nothing to worry about.

You can read his thoughts on “Inflation Proofing your Portfolio” here.

SINLetter 2.0: Your Feedback Required

Over the last few weeks we have been working on redesigning the SINLetter website to add new features, add additional links, and update the overall look and feel of SINLetter.com. Some of the changes that we have planned are

  • A new navigation menu on the right hand side that will feature additional links, blog archives by month and recent blog comments.
  • The current font type will be changed and the font size will be increased to help make it easier for visitors to read the newsletters and blog.
  • Allow visitors to see all historical trades through a link at the bottom of the model portfolio page. This feature is currently live. I should point out that the model portfolio automatically updates itself every day and you can see the SINLetter model performance in (almost) real time.
  • Forums may be added to allow subscribers to discuss stocks and investment strategies as well as ask questions.

Your feedback will be vital in shaping the next version of SINLetter. Your response to the following questions would be very helpful to us. You could email your response or post it as a comment.

  • Should we change the overall look and feel of this website from its current black/gray background with off-white text to a white/gray background with black text?
  • Would you be interested in sector lists? For example the September 2005 edition of SINLetter contained a list of home builders and the December 2005 edition contained a list of Indian ADRs.
  • Would you like to see forums on this website?
  • Any additional features that would be of interest to you?

The Essentials of Trading: A Short Review

I was recently asked to review a new book called The Essentials of Trading by John Forman before it goes on sale later this month at Amazon.com. For those of you who are interested in trading, especially in foreign exchange (forex), this book provides a good introduction. The Essentials of Trading covers basic topics such as market orders, limit orders, stop orders, bid/ask spreads and use of margin that are applicable to stock trading as well. While much of this basic information can be found by searching the internet, certain parts of this book that cover advanced concepts and the use of the Oanda FXTrade tool can be very useful to people who are considering trading in forex.

After introducing the basics, the book also delves into factors that influence price movement, risk management through hedging and market analysis. In short, this book starts out with the basics but then covers advanced concepts in great detail. John Forman’s 20 years of trading and investing experience are clearly visible in the content of this book.

In the stock market, margin is a tool that allows you to borrow money from your broker based on the value of your existing account to buy even more stocks. Since margin increases your potential for profit and at the same time increases your risk exposure, it is often called a “double-edged sword”. The margin requirement to buy stocks is usually 50%. You have to put up at least $5,000 if you wish to buy $10,000 worth of stocks. It was interesting to learn from this book that in the forex market, the margin requirement can be as low as 5% of the total trade. In effect, you could utilize just $50,000 to buy $1 million contracts.

A series of security vulnerabilities have made headlines over the last week affecting a vast range of products. What stands out about these vulnerabilities is that they are all rated highly critical or extremely critical by Secunia and affect various operating systems such as Windows, Mac and Linux. Another important thing to note is that these vulnerabilities will not get automatically patched through Windows Update and require user action by upgrading to the latest version of the product or using preventative measures.

  • The first vulnerability was discovered in Adobe Macromedia Flash products and you can find information about this vulnerability in this CERT advisory and can download the latest version of flash here.
  • The second vulnerability was discovered today and relates to various RealNetworks products including RealPlayer and Rhapsody. You can find additional information about this vulnerability from this Secunia advisory. RealNetworks recommends upgrading to the latest version of their products and you can find additional information here.
  • The third and extremely critical vulnerability relates to Internet Explorer and was reported by Secunia yesterday. While a patch is currently not available for this vulnerability, users can take preventative measures by not visiting unfamiliar websites and/or disabling active scripting.
